Flax, wildflowers and foraging

Weaving for Wellbeing is into its third block of 10 sessions, over half way through the project. Over the next block we have started to plant flax seed and the wildflowers for dyeing, foraged with Pia Castleton and processed flax for future workshops with the group.

Planting Flax: What a fun session this week was! We spent the day outside in the Comfrey gardens digging and prepping our garden bed for growing our own flax.  We will be using the flax that we grow to process from seed to linen during the coming months. We worked together doing some tough graft in the Spring weather, it felt rewarding working collectively on a common goal.

Foraging: We were blessed with good weather for a session outside with visiting foraging expert, Pia Castleton. Pia led the group around the Comfrey gardens introducing everyone to locally found ‘weeds’ that are edible. We got to harvest what we found and made a chimichurri which we got to enjoy with some premade treats Pia had made using the same ingredients in different ways. The women got to use their willow baskets that they made during the cooler months. The sun really made it an extra special day.

Planting flowers for dyeing: This week was another lush day outside. We did a little bit of everything today – we sowed some flower seeds for more natural dyeing in the coming weeks. After getting our hands dirty Savannah taught the group some drawing exercises then led the women through observational drawing around the gardens. Lastly we tended to our flax seeds, they’re coming up quick!

Flax to linen and picking dandelions: To prepare for upcoming sessions, we processed more flax and spun it into linen thread so we had lots for our upcoming flatweaving sessions. Later on in the day we picked some dandelions to dry and make into cordage, this too will be used in our flatweaves.
