Weaving for Wellbeing is a fourteen month project supporting wellbeing and nature-connectedness through creative practice, for women who attend the Comfrey Project. Working with artists Savannah Rios-Wills and Saya Rose Naruse, the women will embark on creative activities, skills sharing, storytelling, nature walks and gardening. They will use plants and flora from the Comfrey garden and allotment over the course of the changing seasons through seasonal focused creative sessions, foraging, weaving, natural dying and making cordage. They will visit the Shipley Art Gallery to be inspired by the textile collection and new garden space, culminating in an exhibition at the Shipley Art Gallery and a publication in October 2026.
The project supports The Comfrey Project’s mission to use nature to empower, nurture wellbeing, and build a strong, inclusive community where people can thrive. The project will support the participant’s emotional wellbeing, in particular those who have experienced trauma and uncertainty; help them reconnect to the earth and foster a sense of grounding and stability. Alongside this there is an opportunity to develop creative and craft skills with potential future income generation in mind; an opportunity to share weaving techniques and styles from different cultures. It will create a safe, supportive space where women can bond, share stories, and build community to combat isolation; use natural, locally sourced, or foraged materials aligning with their sustainable practices, and teaching the women how to repurpose resources creatively.
Funded by an Arts Council National Lottery Project Grant and supported by the Comfrey Project and the Shipley Art Gallery
